Gluten Free Beer NZ

One of the hardest things about being on a gluten-free diet is the lack of gluten-free beer in NZ!
This applies whether you are gluten-free through choice, gluten intolerance, or coeliac disease.

Breweries makes beer from grains that contain gluten, such as barley, wheat or rye. Processing doesn’t remove gluten, and it remains present in the final beer produced for sale.

Coincidentally, some spirits such as whiskey, vodka, bourbon and gin are also made from these grains, but spirits go through a distilling process which ensures the final product is gluten free.

However, some beer can be gluten-free!

This comes in two types:

• Gluten-free beer, brewed from gluten-free grains such as sorghum, rice or millet.
• Gluten-reduced beer, which goes through special processing to reduce the gluten content. This normally is tailored to bring the gluten content to below 20 ppm (20 parts per million), which is generally thought to be a safe limit for most people.
  We don’t recommend that people with coeliac disease consume gluten-reduced beer, to avoid negative reactions.
